About This Challenge

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and his government, carried out by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plot was intended to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, killing the king and members of Parliament.

  • The conspirators rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords and filled it with barrels of gunpowder.
  • One of the plotters, Guy Fawkes, was caught guarding the gunpowder on the night of 4 November and arrested.
  • After being tortured, Fawkes revealed the names of his co-conspirators, leading to their capture and execution.
