  • 1839: Appointed as commander of HMS Erebus on a voyage to Antarctica
  • January 1841: Discovers the Ross Sea and Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica

  • January 1841: Names Mount Erebus and Mount Terror after his ships

  • 1851: Becomes a Fellow of the Royal Society
  • 1847: Publishes his account of the Antarctic expedition in 'A Voyage of Discovery and Research in the Southern and Antarctic Regions'
  • April 3, 1862: Dies in London, England
